Neon Genesis Evangelion - Anime TV Series Analysis - Science’s Children

Mad Scientists

(Major Spoilers Ahead!)

Tomorrow, in the name of commerce, as today in the name of fertility, Tyrell Corporation will create Rachel Tyrell.

Deckard–How can it not know what it is?

Gendoh Ikari with Ritsuko Akagi’s assistance developed and raised the Rei clones to gain control of SEELE’s prophecy and become the ruling monarch of the human race’s next evolutionary step spiritual unity. The clones were just one part of a greater scheme that involved the Human Complement Project, the EVAs and Dummy Plugs.

Gendoh feeds his greed for power with the progress of his creation is making and this is the extent of his emotional tie to Rei. The closer Rei gets to perfection of the cut of her key to the Third Impact, the happier he is. Rei is also the legacy of Gendoh’s late wife and he can enjoy their commonalities without any guilt over Yui’s death.

Yui also lives as a bridge between the borrowed Angel technology and the human pilot in the EVA series giant robots. The conflict between man’s creation and what man cannot control is illustrated during Rei’s first EVA test. EVA-00 goes berserk and tries to kill Gendoh.

Was Gendoh’s fatal flaw in cloning Adam and letting this grow into EVA and then absorb his wife?

Gendoh is the epitemy of mad science. He will stop at nothing to push man away from his destiny. He thinks little of consequences or who suffers as a result of his monsterous creations. As a puppeteer he yanks everyone under his rule into ungodly human positions, causing them to make the choice between absolute terror and triumph. His own twisted and mysterious ideas about the Third Impact, and his heated race to that finish line cause its apocolyptic result. He sees himself as intelectually superior to his self-proclaimed flock, and sees this as good reason to decide their fate. As Dr. Seede today rationalizes cloning humans as an idea that we can eventually accept and catch up with, Gendoh is always three steps ahead leaving destruction, anger and confusion in his wake. It is no wonder that both of his greatest creations, Rei and EVA, rebel against their programming and leave the world and Gendoh begging for forgiveness.

Roy Batty caves in Eldon Tyrell’s skull, and Rei Ayanami watches a pathetic Gendoh Ikari dissolve into LCL with the rest of humanity. More human than human, or an inherited inhumanity from their masters? God can have no peers, and it is up to the inferior creations of man to execute the mad scientists who would stand head and shoulders with God.

For every action there is a reaction. Blade Runner’s and EVA’s messages are at least cautionary and most likely true.
