I Beat a Video Game! - I Just Wasted 20 Hours of my Life!

I have always sucked at video games. In fact, I have never beat one. On average I am extremely lucky to get to the second level of the game on the easy setting. FMV special ending cinemas are not a treat I’m destined to see any time in the near future.

Because of my fear of closure and death I always give up on the game in the middle of the very last level. Falling for all the traps in the last castle of Legend of Zelda, I give up. Unable to beat the queen-alienesque uber-boss in Phantasy Star, I give up. After 40+ hours of wasted Saturdays roleplaying my way through Final Fantasy III (VI), I give up on the last maze, not even coming close to teleporting to the boss. I can’t win, my fear overrides my desire or hope for a sense of accomplishment.

What satisfaction can this so called accomplishment bring, anyway? None. If I had friends who were playing the same games it would make sense to boast that I came to the end of this month’s perilous journey. It is embarassing when I’m surprised by the "How was your weekend?" question every Monday and all I can think to say is, "Good, I played videogames." The situation worsens when the interigator digs deeper and you have to explain what the game was like, "Well, I’m this midget in a Robin Hood costume and I have to save the princess, but the best part is that I get to kick chickens around and they cluck." This interview is over!

This weekend, I started playing Final Fantasy Tactics. It is the most draining, patience wearing game I’ve played since the last Final Fantasy. The game is centered around tactical battles that move the story along and allow your soldiers to gain experience. Maybe I have one of the game’s preferences set incorrectly but one battle seriously takes hours. Not just the major battles either, but the random skirmishes that are there for your units to quickly gain experience. I’m not ready for a game like this. I love the Final Fantasy world with its MIDI music, unique character designs and spectacular battle special effects, even for a weakling Bolt spell. My love is not in endless supply, niether is my time. I will have to be insanely inspired to even come close to finishing this game. If it does come to a close, then I can conquer my fear of death.
