When Gender Loses Its Meaning Through Triumph
(Major Spoilers Ahead!)
Escaflowne’s greatest achievement is presenting sci-fi/fantasy stereotypes that the audience can care about as human beings. The cast’s many imperfections, flaws and embarrassments make them all accessible to an anime audience that has seen too many plastic hero shows, with stupid brawny men and even dumber big breasted female ciphers. Escaflowne questions every gender role encountered in times of war and confusion and answers these seemingly bulletproof archetypes with the fragile human spirit that connects us all. What good are dignity, pride, patriotism, and valor when you cannot feel love for your fellow man, woman and Atlantean?
So the next time you feel like your uncontrollably acting out a gender stereotype just remember what a real dorky nerd you are. The minute you can forget your overblown pride is the minute you become human. Escaflowne is a great teaching tool for this life-lesson, though it is more subtle in its presentation than I am obvious in mine.
